JAB: The Journal of Artists' Books
Since 1994 JAB has been dedicated to providing a forum for critical, theoretical, and creative engagement with artists' books. In 2007 JAB began publishing from the Columbia College Chicago, Center for Book and Paper Arts and we have begun an active initiative to increase student opportunities and participation in JAB activities. For instance, this year in conjunction with Artists Books online at the University of Virginia <http://www.artistsbooksonline.org/index.html> we hired Karol Shewmaker, a current MFA graduate student in the Interdisciplinary Arts Book & Paper program, as an intern. Ken Gerleve, another graduate student in the program, designed JAB23 under the tutelage of Professor Clifton Meador. Daniel Mellis, a first year student in the MFA program, has participated in design and production on JAB21 and JAB23. These opportunities provide the students access to publication, design, and conceptual undertakings that are shaping the field of book arts.
Our mission is to develop the field of artist's books by means of critical discourse and creative exploration of the intersections of book arts, artists' books, poetry, photography, experimental literature, and other book related creative endeavors. We are interested in expanding the audience for artists who make books, and each issue of JAB will be filled with essays, reviews, and artists' projects focused on the book as an action-packed intermedia device.
JAB (ISSN 1085 - 1461) is published twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. The current issue (JAB22) re-presents the ACTION/INTERACTION Book Arts Conference held at Book & Paper in the summer of 2007. JAB23 scheduled to be published May 1, 2008 features articles by Stefan Soltek, Kyle Schlesinger, Norah Lind, and Jae Rossman.
