BOOK OF ORIGINS: A SURVEY OF AMERICAN FINE BINDINGS
January 12–February 23, 2008

This traveling exhibition features twenty contemporary bindings by ten American binders. The group includes established masters as well as gifted emerging artists. Two works are presented by each binder: their binding, in response to a supplied text block of Book of Origins, and an additional example of their work.

The Edible Book Show & Tea is the most amusing thing since sliced bread; in fact, sliced bread was a vital ingredient in several of last year’s edible books. Created by Judith Hoffberg of Umbrella Editions, this is an international event, which occurs in multiple venues and time zones and consists of talented cook-artisans such as you, concocting book-like sculptures made of food and bringing them to the Columbia College Library to be consumed. Some of last year’s edible books were made of yummy things such as chocolate, salami, and of course the ubiquitous sliced bread. See http://www.diffusionadage.com/livremangeable/index.html
FREE if you RSVP, make and bring an edible book to share or $10.00 for people who are unsure of their culinary bookmaking skills and prefer to just eat books. Check our website in February for contact information. All proceeds are to benefit the Bindery.

PAPEL MEXICANO

Paper is everywhere and is used in all societies today. The interesting
thing about how paper is used in Mexico is the variety, artistry and in-
genuity. A Dia de los Muertos altar in honor of Dard Hunter (considered the “God” of today’s papermakers), to various proofs that surrealism is alive and well in Mexico today—proof that imagination knows no bounds. Strange wings and long tongues that emerge from the open mouths of exotic painted creatures, skulls and painted masks, amate figures (used in a sort of witchcraft) and a plethora of papel picado... these and muchos mas will be on exhibit at the Center. Contributions of Chicago Mexican-Americans will also be exhibited with the help of Columbia’s Latino Alliance members.
READING, WRITING & ‘RITHMETIC

Before television, before video games and before Sesame Street, we
learned
the basic 3 R’s in a simpler way. This exhibition looks at writing
manuals dating back to the seventeenth century; early readers and
spellers, flash-cards and alphabet books, math and geometry tomes from
the turn-of-the-century, all what are now thought of as “ancient”
learning tools. Dick & Jane invite you to see why the state of
education is in such turmoil today.

Waverly Deutsch, Clinical Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship, has
said: “[Entrepreneurship]…is a process that involves a little bit of
luck. It’s so important to entrepreneurs.” In this installment in our
Friday Night Lecture Series, Ms. Deutsch will offer advice that will
minimize your dependence on luck as you begin to make a living by
selling your art. Waverly Deutsch teaches in the Graduate School of
Business at the University of Chicago.
