Special Evening Events

Music and Dialog at COPI

Four Hundred Years of Music in Santurce: A Conversation with its Musicians
Cuatrocientos años de música en Santurce: Una conversación con sus músicos
Marisol Berríos-Miranda and Shannon Dudley, producers and hosts

In the twentieth century, the black community of Santurce grew into Puerto Rico's commercial and cultural center, a destination for immigrants from other parts of the island, and a stepping stone for emigration to the United States. This panel discussion will focus on the encounter between Santurce's historic Afro-Caribbean culture and modern commercial music. It will include a presentation on the “musical geography” of Santurce/Cangrejos by ethnomusicologist Marisol Berríos-Miranda, followed by a more spontaneous exchange between prominent musicians and cultural workers, in which music-making will be encouraged.

Other special events to be announced.
