Lead Gently, Lord

Cleveland-born composer Leslie Adams is composer-in-residence and artistic director of Accord Associates, Inc. Among his list of works is Blake, an opera in four acts; A Kiss in Xanadu, a ballet for orchestra; and Dunbar Songs, for voice and chamber orchestra.

"Lead Gently, Lord" is the second movement of Hymn to Freedom, which is based on a poem by African-American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar and was composed especially for the Black Music Repertory Ensemble. It was written in the summer of 1989 and was completed on August 18. The work is lyrical and is filled with timbral contrasts and variety.

World Premiere Performance. Commissioned by the Center for Black Music Research with a grant from the Borg-Warner Foundation, Ellen Benjamin, Director of Corporate Contributions.
