Research Initiatives

The Center often identifies areas in which special research initiatives can serve to explore new modes of investigation or define future research topics. Among these initiatives have been Interarts Inquiry, which spawned the publication of Lenox Avenue: A Journal of Interarts Inquiry; Project Kalinda and Project Stop-Time, both of which supported a performance ensemble and the publication of several issues of a project newsletter; the triangular research methodology, which was applied in the research projects of six CBMR Rockefeller Resident Fellows; and Black Music and Linguistics.

Through these initiatives, scholars from around the world, representing many specializations, have collaborated to produce new research and identify possibilities for ongoing research. Another special initiative has been a continuing exploration of the life and work of Alton Augustus Adams, who was the first black bandmaster in the U.S. Navy.
