Janet Harper, Catalog Librarian, made a presentation titled “Chicago’s Black Cultural Renaissance” on the history of Chicago gospel music to a DePaul University class.
Archivist and Digital Librarian Laurie Lee Moses attended the ARMA 2012 Expo and several educational sessions in August, exploring enterprise level access and retrieval of electronic documents and files, including indexing on a large scale, and records management best practices. She met with a number of vendors, including a one-on-one demonstration session with HP Autonomy, to discuss how cutting edge tools and techniques might be used in an academic archives. Moses augmented her knowledge of electronic documents archiving through an SAA-created seminar hosted by the Chicago Area Archivists at Northwestern University.
Executive Director Monica Hairston O’Connell co-authored and co-presented with Sherrie Tucker (associate professor of American Studies, University of Kansas) a paper titled “Not One to Toot Her Own Horn(?): Melba Liston’s Oral Histories and Classroom Presentations.” The paper was a part of a panel titled “Beyond the Solo: Jazz, Gender, and Collaboration” given at the November 2012 joint meeting in New Orleans of the American Musicological Society, the Society for Ethnomusicology, and the Society for Music Theory. At the same meeting, O’Connell was elected chair of the SEM Archiving special interest group. In October she presented a paper titled “Sound, Place, and Black Music Archives” at Brown University’s John Nicholas Brown Center for the Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage, where she was a fall 2012 visiting fellow.
Deputy Director Morris Phibbs attended a two-day workshop at the Newberry Library in Chicago during November 2012. Titled “Sustainable Preservation Practices for Managing Storage Environments,” the workshop was presented by Image Permanence Institute in collaboration with the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Former CBMR Webmaster Peter Shultz has a new title: Manager of Web Applications. The change reflects his increased responsibilities at the Center. In his role as a music theorist, he continues to work on his dissertation and teach writing at the University of Chicago. His writing on musical narrativity is under contract to appear in an edited volume from Routledge Press.
