Fred Crane Collection

The Fred Crane Collection is a collection of early commercial recordings (cylinders and discs) of black performers and imitators of black performers who recorded in 1920 or before. Included are discs of James Reese Europe's Orchestra and the 369th Infantry band playing fox trots and ragtime pieces; early gospel quartets including the Polk Miller Quartet, the Fisk Jubilee Quartet, and the Hampton Quartet, and a number of popular, blues, and jazz vocalists. The collection serves as an original source for the study of performance practice around the turn of the twentieth century.
