Illinois PIRC
Parents around the state of Illinois now have a new way to support their child’s education. In partnership with The Harris Center for Early Childhood Education (ECE), the Center for Community Arts Partnerships (CCAP) operates the Illinois Parent Information Resource Center (Illinois PIRC) at Columbia College Chicago. Funded by the United States Department of Education and supporting the Illinois State Board of Education, Illinois PIRC’s efforts meet the educational needs of children and parents statewide. Through six identified goals, CCAP and ECE have developed an arts-based, intergenerational, community-centered approach to parent involvement that aligns with No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation and local district needs. Statewide, Illinois PIRC implements and supports a variety of programs and policies, and provides resources to increase parental involvement, improve student academic achievement, and strengthen partnerships among parents, teachers, school administration and communities. Illinois PIRC also provides parents with critical information about Title I of NCLB, school choice, and supplemental educational services available in their communities.
Parents are critical to a child’s academic success. By being involved in their child’s school, as well as creating a home environment that supports learning, parents can help ensure that their child does well in school. Research indicates that children with parents who are involved in their education do better academically. Regardless of income and background, students with involved parents are more likely to earn high grades and test scores, enroll in higher level programs, attend school regularly, show improved behavior, and develop better social skills.

Through community workshops, school presentations and summer institutes, parents will have access to information designed to improve their own skills and knowledge, and to help their child succeed academically. As an integral part of Illinois PIRC, The Harris Center for Early Childhood Education coordinates the early childhood programming of Illinois PIRC, which focuses on meeting the needs of parents of children ages birth to eight. As a result, every parent will be encouraged to get involved in all aspects of their child’s education.
