About Saturday Scholars
The Saturday Scholars program is a critical component of the Center for Community Arts Partnerships' (CCAP) college readiness initiatives. Supported by JPMorgan Chase Bank (formerly Bank One) and Columbia College, it is a unique example of a corporate and higher-education partnership in the financial-services industry. Saturday Scholars helps level the playing field for students from economically disadvantaged, inner-city neighborhoods, most of whom are the first in their families to attend college.
Saturday Scholars provides comprehensive college and workforce preparation to approximately 150 students annually. From freshman through senior year, Scholars work with adult mentors, many from Chase Bank, to forge relationships that continue beyond graduation.
Starting in the fall, Scholars and their mentors meet at Columbia College two Saturdays every month during the academic year. They attend classes in seminar discussion, mathematics, writing, public speaking, goal setting, life and leadership skills, current events and more. Students learn time management, financial literacy and goal setting - skills that will help them throughout their lives. In addition, Scholars participate in social and networking opportunities, and attend cultural outings such as plays and museum exhibitions. The college readiness experience is brought full circle with college and university tours. Through it all, scholars receive the guidance and support necessary from their mentors to fulfill their personal, educational and professional dreams.
