Summer Reading Class
When the Levees Broke:  What Would You Do?
Mondays, June 18 - July 23, 2007, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Civic Engagement Project in New Orleans:  July 29 - August 4, 2007
This year's Summer Reading text is When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, by filmmaker Spike Lee.  Similar to many who watched the news footage of Hurricane Katrina, Lee was taken aback not only by the degree of damage, but also by the slow response of the emergency and recovery effort.  As a result, he was moved to document this American tragedy.  The documentary is structured in four acts - each of them dealing with a different aspect of the events that proceeded - and follows Katrina's tragic passage through New Orleans.

A year-and-a-half later, New Orleans communities are still living in the same conditions they were when Katrina hit.  Over the course of six weeks, Saturday Scholars will view the film from the lens of what they would do if given the opportunity to help New Orleans' residents, with limited income, rebuild their communities.  Using group discussion, additional readings and guest speakers, students will gain an understanding of the magnitude of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.  Following the class, students will visit New Orleans for one week and have the opportunity to implement the strategies they discussed in class.
