PROVOST'S FORUM
7 February 2007
back to forum index
This forum began at 12 PM in the Hokin Auditorium in the 623 S. Wabash Building. Ultimately there were perhaps 75 people in attendance. The Provost began by noting the faculty who will be the next Distinguished College Teacher (Sara Livingston), Distinguished College Scholar (Dominique Cheenee), Distinguished College Artist (Garnett Kilberg Cohen) and Critical Encounters Fellow (Stephanie Shonekan). He then thanked the Deans and Department Chairs for their assistance in helping to select these four individuals from the many worthy nominees.
Searches are proceeding well for the LAS and F&PA Dean positions. Approximately 25 faculty searches [for both new and replacement positions] are proceeding along well and it is the hope of the Provost that these searches will be completed by April 1st. Searches and interviews are a two way process; we should represent ourselves and our college well to prospective candidates.
The Rank/Promotion Task Force is being chaired by Deputy Provost Love and the schedule for its meetings this semester is being established [this body met first on December 13th and will be meeting again on February 21st]. The review of the tenure process has been pushed back though the five-year review of tenured faculty will be examined during the 2007-2008 academic year. A committee is to be formed that will include six faculty that the Provost will chair [including faculty recommended by CCFO President Keith Kostecka].
Associate Provost Anne Foley will chair the Steering Committee to prepare us for our upcoming NCA visit. This committee will be comprised of people from around the college and it will be constituted by or about March 1st. Though this body will be inclusive, it will be a manageable size so that it can stay on task. It is likely that a number of people outside this body will be asked to contribute to the self-study. When the visit occurs [we hope for this to be in the spring], the visiting team will be about six people.
The Art of Leadership Program will this Friday present certificates of completion to its latest "class". The efforts of Jeffrey Grauel were noted and thanks were given to all those who had participated.
The 2007 Summer AP Institute will be held from July 23rd - July 27th here at the college. We expect about 180 to attend [including some from other countries]. Columbia College Chicago is the only national site doing this in the arts.
In early to mid-March the Provost, who has been working with a consultant on this issue, will make known a plan to address this here at the college. This is a difficult issue that includes salary concerns, working conditions and the decreasing number of minority applicants across the nation. More will be discussed on this issue in the future.
A question was later asked by Howard Schlossberg about the working conditions at the college. The Provost noted that until the Teaching Load Adjustment (TLA) is fully implemented we are at a significant disadvantage.
An additional question was asked by Annette Barbier about retaining minority faculty. The Provost stated that the college may have to look at targeted hiring; the college's percentage of minority faculty has decreased.
On the issue of salary, it is worth noting that there are many significant pressures on the college's budget. The Provost though stated that he is committed to addressing salary compression and introducing a merit raise system.
The Provost next took a moment to note the good work of people he sees on a daily or weekly basis. These individuals include: Yun Kim; David Krause; Rebecca Courington; Julie Redmond; Gillian Moore and Lee Gerstein who has done a great deal with updating and managing faculty records.
The just completed J-session was very successful with ~ 300 students taking courses [an increase from last year's enrollment of
~ 150]. This increase is a happy by-product of the change in our academic calendar.
We are committed to revising student Academic Advising. More to come on this issue later.
Kevin Henry, Margaret Sullivan and Rob Lageux will be making presentations at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) in early March as part of our partnership with the DIT. Margaret Sullivan will also be presenting a paper in Scotland either before or after the DIT presentation. The symposia held here at the college in the fall was very good; the Provost thanked all who helped to organize this joint program.
