MARCH 8 th , 2006; 1 PM ( FERGUSON THEATER)

Please find below my notes of what was discussed during this presentation.

The President began by noting that this "presentation" would have two parts with one being prepared remarks on his part and then a Q/A/Comments session. He also introduced the senior administration of the college.

He began by saying "we are at a crossroads". He noted the college's graduation rates, increasing retention of students, our completion rates, raised standards and increased enrollment. The President further noted that the college is moving forward toward achieving the goals of 2010 and that "the senior administration is concerned about cost" [tuition will increase by 4.75% for the next school year]. He further noted the Campus Master Plan and specifically stated that the student center, media production center and FP&A complex on 11 th street are high priorities for the college. He also noted that we are going through a time of change at the college and that this has been distressing to certain parts of the college community; this he noted has been recently reported in the Chronicle.
Q/A/COMMENT SESSION

(I here try to capture the highlights and essence of this session.)

The difficulties of students only having ten minutes between classes was raised' hopefully the development of a "universal" schedule may address a part of this concern.

The President was asked about the development of the student center. This was noted as a priority as stated above. As an aside, the YMCA was noted to be considering building its corporate HQ on State Street right across from the UC. Discussions about Columbia possibly using this facility, if it has athletic facilities, will occur.

Alarm lights will be installed in all buildings for students who are hearing impaired so that they know when there are fire drills or real disasters [this was asked by an ASL major].

A student by the name of Matthew Castle asked about the student who was recently fired based on the wackywarrick.com web site. Matthew asked if the college has freedom of speech. The President responded by saying that we do have freedom of speech at the college and that the firing was a personnel issue and no one here can speak to this. President Carter said the student in question [Mark Phillips] should be asked why he was fired.

A question was asked about meal plans for students at the college in the UC. Next year, all residential students will be able to dine, with a meal plan if they wish, in the UC. In fact, there might be meal plans open for the whole college community.

Chap Freeman was noted as the recipient of the Distinguished College Teacher and the two new degree programs in Game Design and in music composition.

A concern was raised about the need to better recruit international students. The need to have more money and resources available for the Conaway project was raised by a student named Chris Harris.

The need to have our nearly 35,000 alumni give unrestricted money to the college was noted as important by President Carter.

A concern was raised about the recent Supreme Court decision about military recruiting on college campuses was raised. The President noted that Columbia College will follow the letter of the law.

A question that was widely applauded by all present was what would Warrick Carter do to improve our retention rate and recruiting. He answered by noting the new open door scholarships the college has in place and the need to hire more faculty/staff to reflect the population of our student body.

The need to have intellectual property policies in place to protect the individual and the institution was stated.

A question was raised about having additional accommodations available to students in the Student Health Center. Currently, students pay a $20 fee for this service. Other institutions have their students pay $100-150 for health care services. Perhaps, we should re-visit the amount we have our students pay per term.

It was asserted that we would never have a surplus of scholarship money again.

A question was raised about the cost of Frequency TV. The cost for this appears minimal and this "venue" does provide valuable experience for TV majors at the college.

A final point was raised about dis-satisfaction with services provided in the UC. Alicia Berg noted that she regularly meets with the management of the UC and that she would take this concern into her next meeting with the UC's management.
