Web Design (5 Week Course)
The Web Design Course is designed to give beginners a solid understanding of what it takes to build a website. The workshops will introduce you to important web concepts and explain the necessary steps you need to take to create your own web presence. You will also learn about HTML, image preparation techniques, and the basics of two industry leading web applications: Dreamweaver (used for traditional web design) and Flash (used for more interactive web experience).
Week 1
Basic Web Site Architecture - Pages and Directories inside Root Folder
Working with a Server - FTP and other client and server side apps and concepts
Domain Name Systems - Understanding the Domain Name System
Creating an HTML document (index.html) - Understanding the structure of html
What is the HTML element? - Examine the roles of Head and Body elements as 1st and 2nd children of the root HTML element
Adding elements and attributes in the Body
Adding an image in the body
Discuss File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and use a client FTP application to upload the root folder
Test the index file on the server using a web browser (discuss different types of browsers and how they show pages differently)
Week 2
Managing graphic files in Photoshop - when to use gif, jpeg, png and bmp file formats for the web
Photoshop techniques for the web - gradients/repeat x, transparencies
Building a web gallery using Bridge and/or Lightbox
Adding Links - Internal, external, mail and null
Creating an Imagemap
Adding Audio and Video files - linked and embedded
Introduce Dreamweaver
Setting up the client FTP application in Dreamweaver using the Site Manager
Examine the Dreamweaver interface
Week 3
How Browsers Handle Fonts
Web Page Size - How to create a fixed width or elastic web page layout
Working with tables
Introduction to CSS - Examine the difference between external, embedded and inline styling
Creating Links - internal, external, mail and null
Creating a table menu
Adding and working with Library Assets
Week 4
Introduction to Flash - What is it and what does it do? Some Flash genealogy!
Examine the Flash Interface - Using the workspace tools - Essentials
Understanding the basics of motion and shape Tweening
Create a simple animation using Motion Tween, Rotate and the Motion Editor
Using ActionScript to control events in the Timeline
Explain symbols, layers and instances
Create a Flash banner Using motion presets
Apply a conditional statement (loop)
Embed into a table or div in Dreamweaver and upload
Describe how to create an entire web site in Flash
Week 5
Introduction to iWeb
Setting up your site for publishing
Preparing iPhoto, iTunes and Movie directories (apps)
Selecting Themes
Add text and graphics
Add blogs and podcasts
Using the Inspector
Using the media browser
Adding gadgets, Google maps and YouTube videos
Adding HTML
Creating custom pages
Managing the site
Uploading to MobileMe and/or ftp to server or root folder
By signing up for the Web Design Workshop Series you are signing up for all 5 3-hour long workshops. Only participants who attend all 5 workshops will earn the CIT Certificate. Part-time faculty who complete all 5 workshops will also receive a stipend in the amount of $200.00. Full-time staff who also teach part-time in Columbia do not qualify for a stipend. If you have received a stipend and certificate for this course previously, you are not eligible to receive a stipend and certificate for this course again.
In order to receive a certificate or stipend, participants will have to pass an exam proving their understanding of the material. The project-based, hands-on exam will be administered by the instructor during the last hour of the last day of the course.
