Designed for strong pre-professional and professional dancers, this class will share the style and movement sensibility developed by Bill T. Jones and Janet Wong. Together, we will cultivate precise awareness of the skeleton, its weight, and its movement potential, as well as the ability to cover space in movement. Values from modern, postmodern, and classical traditions will be integrated and freely drawn from. We’ll also focus on remaining a thinking, feeling human being that makes choices with genuine consequences throughout the process of moving. Intelligent, challenging physicality will be the point of departure for these investigations.
Ms. SU I-ping, a senior dancer of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, will lead the DanceMasters class that employs some of Cloud Gate's training elements, including Chinese martial arts, Chi Kung (from the principles of Tai Chi Dao Yin) and contemporary dance technique to explore the range from moving to moving in meditation.
This class is open for public observation, $5.00.
Robert Swinston, Director of Choreography, Merce Cunningham Dance Company. His class will be based on the Merce Cunningham technique, emphasizing developing strength, clarity and precision through a center warm-up, back exercises, and moving and jumping phrases. The technique is flexible, not codified, and helps students respond to physical challenges as well as develop mental acuity. Students in the class are expected to have a strong sense of center and will learn to display clear form using the maximum range of the spine and torso.
This class is open for public observation, $5.00.
Margaret Jenkins’ master class focuses on the clarity and articulation necessary to move the body fully, freely, with both wisdom and abandon. The class begins with a warm-up synthesized from Jenkins' years with Cunningham and Limon techniques. Engaging the dancers’ mind and body, she will teach the class a variety of movement phrases and then guide students through the manipulation of that material toward a deeper understanding of choreographic alternatives.
Explore the contemporary Latino soul with Ballet Hispanico. This modern technique class features repertory taught by the company dancers while Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro leads participants through the subtle essences of the company's aesthetic. This class is ideal for dancers seeking to experience the challenge of a diverse repertory as well as expand their horizons of the field.
