2009-2010 DanceMasters Classes

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan

Led by Ms. LEE Ching-chun
Wednesday, January 20 * 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Lou Conte Dance Studio at The hubbard Street Dance Center, 1147 W. Jackson

Ms. Lee, Associate Artistic Director of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, will lead a class that will combine contemporary dance and some of Cloud Gate's training elements including breathing, Tai Chi Tao Yin (an ancient form of Chi Kung), and martial arts. From swift movement and held postures, to slow and fluid gestures, dancers will experience movement as meditation. The class will also tap into the repertoire of Moon Water, a work known for its electrifying stillness and evasion of the norms of gravity.

Koosil-ja/danceKUMIKO

Led by  Koosil-ja
Tuesday, February 2 * 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago (Theater Entrance)

In Koosil-ja’s class, dancers will have an opportunity to explore a performance technique called Live Processing. Dancers will see and read, then copy and combine movements, in real time, from a multitude of video sources displayed on monitors placed throughout the space. Conditioning the body and mind to be more receptive to images in an environment – the eyes will read, the brain will process and the body will render. The video source becomes a potential for creation of new movement beyond the trained body.

Troika Ranch

Led by Dawn Stoppiello
Tuesday, March 2 * 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago (Theater Entrance)

This hybrid class will combine movement, language and concepts from the digital domain to reconnect to the ‘pre-trained’ raw body. The warm up phase will be culled from both old and new traditions with attention to controlled effort and strength in the gross musculature, skeletal alignment and imagery, ease and momentum and using the voice to inform the body and vice versa. The phrase work will draw from Troika Ranch’s style of dance in relation to computer systems and digital video, exploring notions of the edit, ‘looping’ and ‘scratching’ and rapid transformations of scale and time. Dawn Stoppiello is a co-founder of Troika Ranch.

Wayne McGregor | Random Dance

Led by Odette Hughes
Tuesday, MArch 16 * 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago (Theater Entrance)

Odette Hughes, Associate Director and former dancer with Wayne McGregor | Random Dance will lead a fast paced and challenging technique class reflecting the idiosyncratic and dynamic movement style of Wayne McGregor. Participants will be led through research-based choreographic exercises. These generative task-based choreographic tools reflect the methods used by McGregor in the studio with his dancers and will open new doors to individuals' creativity as well as facilitate innovative forms of dancemaking.
