"For three decades, The Dance Center has been a special place for my company. Engagement with a project from its inception, the care extended to our company during our time in Chicago, the involved dance community, and especially our lively engagement with students and audiences, all make it clear that a committed interest in dance drives everything at The Dance Center." - Susan Marshall
Marshall is a fresh, original, powerful voice.” — The Boston Globe
One of the most significant choreographers today” — The New York Times
Play/Pause is a new full-evening work by Susan Marshall embracing the collision of high art and pop culture, raiding and transforming popular dance forms and structures from the YouTube zeitgeist. Set to a commissioned score by Pulitzer Prize–winning composer David Lang performed live by members of the percussion and guitar ensemble Dither and mixed with recorded music, Marshall’s latest work is the ultimate mash-up: postmodern dance theatre meets indie rock on both real and virtual stages.
As part of The Dance Center's audience & community engagements, the 40th season will kickstart with accalimed choreographer Susan Marshall as part of a unique and immersive conversation and participatory event on the south side of Chicago. Crossover will be held at Hyde Park Art Center on Monday, September 16th from 6pm - 9pm. A free public and interactive event, Crossover is an exciting hybrid of two partnering programs - Audience Architects' Moving Dialogs series and Hyde Park Art Center's ArtBAR. In a world where contemporary realities and art are constantly colliding, this ArtBAR Moving Dialog welcomes questions & thoughts surrounding crossover forms that defy categorization. Ms. Marshall will be present for the discussion portion which will begin around 7:30pm and will be joined by other local Chicago artists. >Download more information
