Call for Holiday Card Artwork
2007 Columbia College Holiday Card Competition
Attention students in any major!
Submission dates: September 4 through October 5
New this year: one print card and one electronic card
We're having our third annual holiday card competition! Your art can reach the whole Columbia family, not to mention movers and shakers across the country (college presidents, company executives, influential alumni, gallery owners, and collectors). All you need to do is send in your ideas for one of two cards:
-
Print card: from President Carter to leaders outside the college
-
E-card, sent over the web: from Columbia College senior administration to the entire Columbia community
Students from any discipline can participate, and collaboration is encouraged.
Students from any major can participate. Print card: While students from any major may contribute entries, this format may be of special interest to those in fine arts, graphic design, and photography. E-card: The sky is the limit with the e-card, and is open to students in ANY major -- interactive arts & media, music, dance, acoustic arts, and so on. Both cards: Writers (in journalism, copywriting, fiction writing, etc.) may contribute text. Special consideration will be given to submissions that involve collaboration between students from different disciplines -- a photographer and a fiction writer, for example, or a game designer and a musician.
- The two students or student teams whose art is chosen for holiday cards will each be awarded a $500 stipend.
- Winning entries and honorable mentions will be publicly acknowledged (in the Columbia Chronicle, via e-mail, and on the website).
- Winners and those receiving honorable mentions will have a chance to meet with college leaders at a reception at the president’s house.
- Cards will be mailed to galleries, art collectors, arts funders, and advocates.
- All entries will also be considered for other campus purposes, such as advertising, websites, banners, posters, calendars – providing another opportunity for exposure.
Submission + announcement dates
In order to ensure an ample production and mailing schedule for the cards, you may submit your entry from September 4 through October 5. Winners will be announced the week of October 15.
- Each student or two-student team may submit a maximum of three (3) works of art or designs for consideration -- all for the print card, or all for the e-card, or a combination of both..
- Entrants must submit their own, original work, regardless of when the work was created.
- Art may be image- or text-based, or a combination of the two.
- Subject matter is at the entrant’s discretion, and may or may not respond to a holiday theme. However, imagery and/or language should not be religious in nature.
- Subject matter of chosen entries will be sensitive to the diversity of religious backgrounds of the Columbia community.
- Entries may respond to the following text idea, or propose others: “Best to you and yours this holiday season.” Columbia College reserves the right to provide text that complements the chosen artwork.
- The Department of Creative and Printing Services will work with the chosen artwork to fit the card format and, for e-cards, to optimize the entry for online delivery.
- Cards will be printed in full color or black-and-white, according to the submission.
- Criteria for winning designs include suitability, aesthetics, originality, execution and how effectively the entry captures the spirit of Columbia College Chicago.
- Judging will be done by panels including representatives from the president’s and vice president’s offices, academic departments, marketing and communications, and creative services.
- Though every effort will be made to choose art from entries submitted through this competition, the college reserves the right to choose alternate work, should suitable art not be submitted.
- Columbia College will retain the right to use any submitted art for the college’s marketing purposes.
Only digital files will be considered valid entries. For print card: Submit a high-resolution jpg or tiff file (300 dpi or greater) of your artwork on a CD, along with a hard-copy high-resolution color print-out, in an envelope. For e-card: The submission must fit good design principles for online delivery of your electronic art piece. Submit a CD or DVD (as appropriate).
