Columbia College Chicago was founded in 1890 as the Columbia School of Oratory, a speech college for women (its name was inspired by the 1893 Exposition). A renewed, co-educational version of the college emerged in 1936, emphasizing radio broadcasting’s growing impact. Renamed Columbia College Chicago in 1944, the institution broadened its educational focus to include television and other areas of mass communications during the 1950s. Accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Columbia College Chicago is also accredited as a teacher training institution by the Illinois State Board of Education. By 1963, Columbia evolved into a liberal arts college with an innovative approach to arts and media education and a progressive social agenda. Through the diversity of its students and graduates, the school brings a rich vision and multiplicity of voices to American culture.
