Faculty Guide

Faculty input is central to our programming strategies that help students transition from academia to a professional life in a creative field. Because of the breadth of media taught at Columbia we interact somewhat differently with faculty from each department. In some areas we offer assistance documenting, editing, and packaging student work samples. With other departments we provide a variety of programs that put students- and their work- in front of creative industry professionals to test the waters, practice presenting their work, and to begin networking. And in majors where portfolios are not a tradition, we help faculty explore the changing landscape of employer expectations regarding portfolio presentation. Mission Statement

With the final body of work in mind, we work with faculty and students at all levels, in every major/media, in the college. The quick guide below lists Portfolio Center programs and services according to class level. The links below will provide greater detail. Contacts for each program are listed at the bottom of the page.

Build portfolio development into your syllabus by using this Teaching Guide. Your students will love you for it.

ALL CLASSES
CAPSTONE & ADVANCED CLASSES
CLASS PRESENTATIONS: We make over 100 presentations every year to classes about portfolios in their fields. We also cover the services we provide and how students can access those services. If you think your students (freshmen to seniors) would benefit from focusing on their final body of work, we invite you to schedule a class presentation at the Portfolio Center.

CASE STUDIES: We are developing a compendium of portfolio case studies to provide examples of best practice in all media and majors.

Portfolio-centric ARTICLES & INTERVIEWS are on our website industry pages (pink links on the right side) that will bring definition to the challenges that your students will face as they get ready to find work. Included are these Quick Guides on:
SHOW OFF PORTFOLIO REVIEWS: Throughout the semester professionals visit us  specifically to review your student’s work in 20 minute, one-on-one, meetings.

PORTFOLIO SESSIONS are scheduled during your class period and take place in the Portfolio Center. We’ll moderate a discussion about portfolios with a couple of (media specific) industry professionals and your students followed by optional group portfolio reviews- a great way to ease students into the portfolio development and presentation process.

WEB AGENT, our web building system, is available to all juniors, seniors and graduate students. At your request, we will set up accounts and schedule workshops for your entire class plus create a watch list for you so you can check on (and comment on) their portfolio progress, with ease. Web Agent also contains a database of online portfolios set up for employers seeking new talent emerging from Columbia but is an equally valuable source for portfolio research.

PORTFOLIO PRODUCTION: We offer various production events three times per semester. For many classes, we can also arrange for photo documentation of student work, in, or nearby your classroom.

FINAL CRITIQUES: We invite you to hold your final critique in the Portfolio Center. We will invite appropriate professionals to review your student’s work.
