Group Piano
Group piano is an ideal way to try out the piano and build the foundation for continued individual study in piano or other instruments. Students will learn orientation to the keyboard, beginning music-reading skills, and simple melodies and chords. Group piano classes are taught in Sherwood’s state-of-the-art keyboard lab. Enrollment is limited to eight students per class.

Off the Record: A History of Rock and Roll
ages 16 and over
This class examines the history of contemporary music since 1950, particularly rock and roll, and the social values that have contributed to its stylistic development. The exploration of the trends in popular music focuses on movements that reflect important political and cultural currents in the United States and across the globe. Off the Record follows Columbia College Chicago’s academic calendar year and is a 15-week class.

Sing Out!
Learn proper singing technique from a professional singer! This is a great class for adults who love to sing and want to train their voice in a non-threatening, fun, and supportive environment. We’ll cover sound production, breathing, diction, interpretation, and musicianship. No prior singing experience is required.

Singing with Style
From Cole Porter to Kurt Weill, Burt Bacharach to Stephen Sondheim—if these are some of your favorite American songwriters, then check out Singing with Style! This is an introduction to cabaret singing that will include performance and listening to classic cabaret recordings. Students will learn how to personalize their performances by telling a story, how
to work with an accompanist, and how to engage an audience through the spoken word that is the hallmark of this unique genre of vocal performance. The class will culminate with a final performance at Davenport’s Piano Bar and Cabaret (or similar venue). Prior vocal training is recommended and instructor approval is required to participate in this course. Offered Spring Session II only.

Adult Chamber Ensemble
This is an excellent introduction to chamber music repertoire and rehearsal/performance techniques for students at intermediate through advanced levels. Students with at least two years of individual study will learn to play within numerous instrumental combinations. An audition will be held during the first week of class to determine placement in groups.

Adult Cello Ensemble
Adult Cello Ensemble rehearses and performs repertoire from the Classical period through works for cello choir by contemporary composers. Participants should have a basic level of proficiency in reading and playing; an audition is required to determine placement. This is an ideal way for cellists to build ensemble-playing skills! This is an 18-week class.

Columbia Community Chorus
Discover the exciting world of choral music by singing in the Columbia Community Chorus. Members learn a variety of choral literature, with emphasis on healthy tone production, blend, musicianship, and the importance of ensemble. The Chorus provides a fun and relaxed opportunity to experience the joy of singing with others. The Community Chorus performs at least twice annually in the December Holiday Concert and for the annual Spring Sing! No prior choral experience is required. The Chorus follows Columbia College Chicago’s academic calendar year and is a year-long program. Registration is for one year (30 weeks; two 15-week sessions).

Columbia Community Music Collective
Columbia Community Music Collective (CCMC), directed by Stephen Burns (Fulcrum Point New Music Project Artistic Director), is open to all instrumentalists interested in developing their orchestra skills and sight reading, rehearsing and performing a wide range of music, exploring works selected from the Baroque to contemporary periods and performing public concerts. The CCMC will also be working closely with new Columbia faculty member Hummie Mann on a collaborative effort with Columbia's MFA students with the goal of performing and recording film scores created by MFA candidates in Music Composition for the Screen.
Columbia Community Music Collective is a year-long program. Registration is for one year (30 weeks; two 15-week sessions).
