Sherwood offers opportunities for students to learn and enhance individual skills while experiencing the joy of making music with others. Our range of group classes and ensembles covers many instruments and styles, and offers something for everyone!

Children’s Chorus
ages 7 to 13
Students will have fun singing folk songs from around the world, rounds and canons, and other works for children’s choir. Students also learn proper breath control and tone production, as well as musicianship and how to read music. Children’s Chorus can be taken alone, or serve as an ideal accompaniment to individual lessons. Students will prepare for performances in the December Holiday Concert and in the annual Spring Sing. This is a year-long program. Registration is for one year (36 weeks; two 18-week terms).
* Tuition for Children’s Chorus is $200 per year for any student currently enrolled in individual lessons at Sherwood.
Strings
Sherwood Junior Orchestra
ages 7 to 13
Sherwood’s Junior Orchestra is for young string students! Students should be able to read music comfortably and must have permission from their individual lesson instructor to participate. Students learn important skills of ensemble playing such as dynamics, intonation, rhythmical accuracy and more. The Junior Orchestra will have at least four performances throughout the year. Sherwood Junior Orchestra is a year-long program. Registration is for one year (36 weeks; two 18-week terms).

Junior Chamber Ensembles
ages 8 to 13
Do you love listening to classical music? Sherwood’s Junior Chamber Ensemble provides young musicians with the opportunity to listen to and perform works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and more. The class is open to piano and string students.
Chamber Ensembles
ages 12 to 18
Participation in a Chamber Ensemble provides students the opportunity to collaborate and perform with other young musicians and to work closely with artist-coaches on a broad range of repertoire. Chamber Ensembles are arranged by an audition and are open to students performing at an intermediate through advanced level. Ensemble coachings are held generally on Friday late afternoon/evening or on Saturday. Sherwood encourages students to make a yearly commitment to participation in a Chamber Ensemble. Chamber Ensembles are expected to perform at least twice per term.
The Susan H. Kincaid Honors Ensemble is awarded to a piano trio or quartet performing repertoire at an intermediate to advanced level. The ensemble performs on Sherwood concert programs and represents the school at venues throughout Chicago. Date and time are arranged by mutual agreement. The Susan H. Kincaid Honors Ensemble is a year-long commitment. Tuition-free.
Piano
Group Piano Classes
ages 6 to 8
Group piano is an ideal way to try out the piano and build the foundation for continued individual study in piano or other instruments. Students will learn orientation to the keyboard, beginning music-reading skills, and simple melodies in an ageappropriate manner. Group piano classes are taught in Sherwood’s state-of-the-art keyboard lab. Enrollment is limited to eight students per class. For Keyboard and Continuing Adventures, parent/caregivers are required to be in proximity of the classroom during class time. (Tuition for Keyboard Adventures includes piano method book.)

Winds & Percussion
Cadet Beginning Band
ages 9 to 11
Have you wanted to play an instrument but there is no band program at your school? You still can. Join one of Sherwood’s newest ensembles and join in the fun! Choose from flute, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. No prior band experience required. Registration is for one year (36 weeks; two 18-week terms).
Cadet Band Registration and Instrumental Rental take place at Sherwood’s Fall Open House on Saturday, August 8, 2009.
Cadet Band Mini-Camp kick-off is from Tuesday, August 18 – Thursday, August 20, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. All new students are encouraged to attend.
Drumming Around the World
ages 10 to 12
Join members of Pulse Beat Music on a percussive journey around the globe! This group drumming class will include rhythmic stops in West Africa, Cuba, Brazil, the Middle East and other exciting places. Students will play rhythms and sing songs from each culture while learning about geography and vocabulary from these far off lands. Percussion Ensemble
ages 10 to 16
An exciting new ensemble for percussion students who are currently participating in individual lessons. Students learn to perform on several different percussion instruments and experience music from many different styles and periods. The Percussion Ensemble will perform at least once during each 18-week term.

World Rhythm Percussion
ages 13 to 18
Explore drumming from West Africa, Cuba, Brazil, and the Middle East among other countries. Students will learn aspects of rhythm from each culture while experiencing it hands on. Chamber Ensembles
ages 12 to 18
Have you wanted to play in a brass quintet? How about a saxophone quartet or a flute trio? Participation in a Chamber Ensemble is a great way to collaborate with other young serious minded musicians. Chamber Ensembles are arranged by an audition and are open to students performing at an intermediate through advanced level. Ensemble coachings are held generally on Friday late afternoon/evening or on Saturday. Sherwood encourages students to make a yearly commitment to participation in a Chamber Ensemble.

Guitar Hero
ages 9 to 13
This class is inspired by the video game “Guitar Hero,” in which gamers play a virtual guitar joystick in time with a classic rock soundtrack. Students will learn to play songs from the “Guitar Hero” and “Rockband” video games, on a real guitar, featuring rock songs from the 60's to the present day. Students will also learn techniques used to play electric guitar and work on improving their rhythmic skills. Admission requires recommendation from instructor. This is an 18-week class.

Musicianship
ages 12 to 18
Sherwood’s musicianship classes are designed to create a fully integrated musician, equally comfortable with a variety of musical styles. Six distinct levels of curriculum are comprised of ear training/sight-singing, music theory, analysis, music history, class performance/improvisation and experience with various musical genres (classical, jazz, blues, and urban contemporary). Each level is designed to be completed over an 18-week term.
Introduction to Music Technology (Midi-class)
ages 13 to 18
Do you want to learn how to create your own sequences, beats, and mixes? Are you interested in the limitless possibilities of music technology? If so, this is the class for you! Introduction to Music Technology is a teens only class and serves as a basic introduction to the world of music technology. Students will learn about MIDI, sequencing, sound design, mixing, and sampling, as well as a variety of other music technology related topics.
Off the Record: A History of Rock and Roll
ages 16 and over
This class examines the history of contemporary music since 1950, particularly rock and roll, and the social values that have contributed to its stylistic development. The exploration of the trends in popular music focuses on movements that reflect important political and cultural currents in the United States and across the globe. Off the Record follows Columbia College Chicago’s academic calendar year and is a 15-week class.

Audition Skills
ages 15 to 18
One-day workshop to help students execute top-notch presentations as they navigate the entrance process for the college or conservatory of their choice. Students will get help with preparing stellar performance tapes to submit with applications, and receive direction with performance
techniques to ace the entrance audition.
