Pre-Collegiate Certificate Program

Ages 12 to 18 

Sherwood's Pre-Collegiate Certificate Program provides accelerated training for talented young musicians. The comprehensive six-level Certificate Program allows middle and high school students an opportunity to work at their own pace while providing them with the skills needed to gain acceptancence into major universities and conservatories across the country. The program is tailored to the skill level of each individual student and is open to students trained in either classical or jazz mediums. Students gain admittance into the Pre-Collegiate Program through an audition. Financial aid is available for students enrolled in the Pre-Collegiate Program.

Program Weekly Components

Individual Lesson
Students enrolled in the Pre-Collegiate Certificate Program are required to take a 60 minute lesson once per week on their primary instrument. Students may focus on traditional or jazz study, and may also choose to take a second private lesson on a secondary instrument as an elective. For details on Sherwood's Individual Lessons, please visit our Individual Lessons webpage. 


Musicianship
Musicianship classes are a key component of the Pre-Collegiate Certificate Program. Six distinct levels of curriculum must be completed to receive certification. Placement is based upon the musicianship placement evaluation provided at the audition. Click here for full class description.


Ensembles
Pre-Collegiate students may select from among several ensemble offerings. Students are placed in ensembles according to ability based upon audition. Select from among the following ensembles:

Jazz Combo
Percussion Ensemble
Harp Ensemble


Electives

Throughout the course of the Certificate Program, different electives will be offered. Electives are meant to enrich and broaden the student's musical knowledge beyond their usual area of study. Please visit the 'Music for Young Adults' page for more information on the classes listed below.

Eligibility

The Pre-Collegiate Certificate Program is open to students ages 12 – 18 and includes the following instruments: piano, percussion, violin, viola, cello, bass, harp, guitar, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba, voice.

Enrollment
Students gain admittance into the Pre-Collegiate Certificate Program through an audition. Auditions are held twice per year.
A non-refundable $35 application fee is required with the application. At the audition, students with their parents/guardians will have a brief interview with program administrators and applicants will also be required to take a musicianship placement evaluation. Pricing
Starting in the fall term of 2011, students accepted into the Pre-Collegiate Certificate Program are not required to pay any additional fees or tuition to enroll in the program beyond the base tuition charge for 60 minute individual lessons. All group class and ensemble enrollment by Pre-Collegiate Certificate Program students is free of charge. This tuition free opportunity is available due to various grants and donations, and Pre-Collegiate students may be asked to participate in one or more fund-raising events throughout the year to assist in supporting the program. (Students who receive individual instruction on their primary instrument outside of Sherwood are required to pay an additional enrollment fee of $400 per term.)
