Preferred Student Age: 10 to 18
Preferred Student Level: Intermediate, Advanced, Adults
How long have you been on Faculty at Sherwood Conservatory of Music?
Since 1998.
Briefly describe your musical pursuits outside Sherwood.
Teaching private students, accompanying and chamber music. I also teach at the University of Illinois at Chicago and conduct and accompany the University Choir.
What do you want to impart to your students through your teaching?
Love of the experience of live music-making; a sense of satisfaction and an understanding of the learning process; self-discovery through discipline and commitment.
Are there specific methods or techniques that you use in your teaching that may be important to share with prospective students?
I stress technique and theory as indispensable parts of musicianship. I teach concepts through humor.
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
Sharing a sense of musical discovery with students.
What are some of your greatest musical memories?
My earliest experience was watching my sister's piano lessons. The other part is hard - there is not just one best memory. The best ones are when I feel a sense of "flow," or I'm "in the zone," a deep deep concentration and absorbance in the moment.
Please describe one of your favorite teachers or mentors.
My college teacher, Arbo Waldma. He is a passionate and hard-working musician and a very creative pedagogue.
What is your favorite type of music?
J.S. Bach and the Baroque period - both my favorites for listening. My favorite to perform is the Romantic period. My favorite pianists are Edwin Fischer, Alfred Brendel Radu Lupu, Sviatoslav Richter.
