Margaret Nichols, Piano Faculty
Preferred Student Age: Any
Preferred Student Level: Any
Briefly describe your musical pursuits outside Sherwood.
Teaching clinics, new music seminars, committees working with teen musicians (to expand ideas and to find musical vocations), orientation classes for parents of piano students, teaching piano to young dancers.
What do you want to impart to your students through your teaching?
The LOVE of music - always growing - whatever the student’s age, musical experience, or previous training.
Are there specific methods or techniques that you use in your teaching that may be important to share with prospective students?
Using small amounts of time to pursue practicing an art.
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
Meeting wonderful people; exploring new students' personalities through their musical responses.
What is your earliest musical experience or best musical memory?
Singing with family members at holidays, then waking up the next morning in my bed - Father had carried me upstairs after I had fallen asleep.
Please describe your favorite teacher.
My first formal piano teacher was an understanding young widow. She always encouraged effort, had extreme quantities of patience and a great sense of humor.
What is your favorite type of music?
This changes depending on my own musical studies: Bach for challenging, peaceful pursuits. Schumann for tonal potential. Beethoven to stretch the mind. Brahms for mature listening. French music for piquancy. I am eager to listen to all new 20th and 21st century sounds.
