Terrance Gray
Terrance Gray, Violin
Preferred Student Age: 8 and up
How long have you been on Faculty at Sherwood Conservatory of Music?
Since 2005
Briefly describe your musical pursuits outside Sherwood.
I am a violinist in the Chicago Sinfonietta and I conduct the Chicago Youth Concert Orchestra.
What do you want to impart to your students through your teaching?
An ability to learn by stacking new information on top of old. Then learning to teach themselves at home; and finally the joy of music (hopefully).
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
Interaction with the student.
What is your earliest musical experience or best musical memory?
Playing violin in the elementary school orchestra.
Please describe one of your favorite mentors.
Ruben Gonzales, former Concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra - He was my favorite teacher and a great mentor. He always showed great patience and concern for me as a person and as a musician. He taught me that in music making I was the most important element, not the instrument. If I kept conscious awareness of myself, all would fall into place.
What is your favorite type of music?
Gustav Mahler is my favorite composer and the Romantic Era is my favorite musical period.
