Rebecca Schorsch
Rebecca Schorsch, Vocal Faculty
Preferred Student Age: Early Teen to Adult (for individual lessons)
Preferred Student Level: Beginner to advanced
How long have you been on Faculty at Sherwood Conservatory of Music?
Since 2000
Briefly describe your musical pursuits outside Sherwood.
I am constantly working on my own performing outside of the school. I study voice weekly and regularly collaborate with chamber musicians and pianists on recitals and I have much orchestral solo experience. I regularly attend Chicago Symphony, Lyric Opera, and other live performances.
What do you want to impart to your students through your teaching?
A true understanding of the basics, healthy tone production, continuous pursuit of personal excellence incorporating high musical standards and maintaining artistic integrity
Are there specific methods or techniques that you use in your teaching that may be important to share with prospective students?
I use a fun and open approach; it is technically very specific (i.e., doesn’t use a whole lot of imagery, but can and will if the student needs it). I want all of my students to come out of their lessons understanding their own singing better, and be able to apply their technique in whatever style they work in -- classical, musical theater, jazz, gospel or pop styles.
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
Helping a student become proficient at something they truly enjoy and helping them realize their potential.
What is your earliest musical experience or best musical memory?
Dancing to Bela Bartok that my father played on the piano when I was 2 or 3.
Please describe your favorite teachers.
Dana Brown, pianist and coach - A genuine “artist” and gifted collaborator.
Jo Rodenburg, voice teacher - A greatly musical vocal technician, kind, supportive and nurturing.
David Schrader, organist and harpsichordist - A phenomenal musician of great personal warmth and humility.
What is your favorite type of music?
I love all great music from all periods and regularly seek opportunities to hear live music (I think very important) and perform it.
