Get to know Jonathan:
What do you want to impart to your students through your teaching?
I want to give students the tools and critical thinking skills to progress independently towards their goals. I want students to develop technique so that they can be musically conversant and thoughtful in their artistic interpretations.
Are there specific techniques that you use in your teaching?
I like to design a set of exercises for each student that will approach the specific skills they need to improve. I focus on developing efficient playing habits that also are rooted in a lyrical, singing style.
What are some of your greatest musical memories?
One of my favorite memories is playing trumpet duets with my grandfather when I was just a beginner.
Please describe your favorite teachers.
David Bilger, principal trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra - He encouraged me to be more flexible in my musical creativity and showed me balance between music and the rest of life.
John Hagstrom, second trumpet of the Chicago Symphony - He taught me that I could be successful through diligence and hard work.
What is your favorite type of music?
I love many composers, but some favorites are J.S. Bach, Mahler, Debussy, and Stravinsky.
