2007-2008 SHERWOOD CELEBRATES
Three years ago, Sherwood embarked on a new approach to music study and enjoyment. It involves adopting a particular theme to be illuminated by special classes, lectures, workshops, music selections, and visual enhancements. In 2006, the theme "Mozart Mania" focused on the 250th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birth and immersed students in the European experience. During 2007, the "American Sound" investigated the music of American classical composers and the incorporation of styles such as gospel, jazz, and Broadway. Our theme for 2007-2008 is "Music and Words." Through it, we plan to explore the influence of one on the other as a source of inspiration and catalyst to creation.
The whole problem can be stated quite simply by asking, 'Is there a meaning to music?' My answer would be, 'Yes.' And 'Can you state in so many words what the meaning is?' My answer to that would be, 'No.'Throughout the ages, debates have risen among musicians and actors as well as composers and lyricists as to which is more important - the music or the words?
- AARON COPLAND
Although agreement may never be reached, consensus is that music can conjure vivid images, convey man's most complex emotions, and express what is said and unsaid. Whether literary works inspire the composer or music supports a story, film, play, or opera, the impact of each art on the other is unmistakable.
Through the theme "Music and Words" we will examine:
- literary themes that sparked musical depictions
- poetry that was transformed into art songs
- the world of the stage as transformed by operas and musical theater
- sacred texts in settings as varied as Bach cantatas and gospel music
