Education Department Offers Free Credit Monitoring
September 2006
Recently, the Education Department student records were compromised during a software upgrade. Records included personal data such as Social Security Numbers and phone numbers. When student loan borrowers logged on at the same time, their information was inadvertently mixed up with that of others, allowing them to see the other student loan borrower's information. Letters were sent to those students affected. The Education Department has now rectified the situation and apologizes to anyone who was affected. In addition, the Education Department will offer free credit monitoring for those affected.
Students affected should contact the Direct Loan Servicing Center at
1-800-848-0979.
