The Poetry Scholarship application is available online. Only complete scholarship applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed by the scholarship committee. Scholarship applicants must also have a completed Admissions file received by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by the same deadline.
IMPORTANT NOTE: It is not necessary to have been accepted to Columbia to apply for this scholarship.
Please follow all directions carefully. Students must submit the following materials to make a complete Poetry Scholarship application - there are two parts to the application:
PART 1: ESSAY
Submit a 500-word essay on "Why I write poetry" to help the scholarship committee understand you and your passion to write poetry.
You may either write your statement directly in the text box provided on the application form, or cut and paste your statement into the text box from a word processing program, such as Microsoft Word. TIP: When cutting and pasting text from a Word document to the text box, please review for correct formatting and punctuation.
PART 2: CREATIVE SAMPLES
Submit six samples of your best creative original poems that you feel demonstrate your strong talent, ability, or achievement.
The application will allow you to upload your work samples as a PDF only (10MB maximum). Please note: many text editors give you the ability to "Save as PDF" format, or you can do this through the Print window on a Mac. If you use a PC without PDF software, there are free programs you can download, such as Bullzip.
