Caution Flags

Caution Flags, also known as C-Flags, are notifications to the student and to the institution processing the student financial aid application that either one or more data elements entered on the FAFSA did not match what the authorizing agency has on record for the applicant or there is adverse information relating to the applicant financial aid status.  Students can have a Caution Flag even if they are not selected for verification.

A student who has an unresolved Caution Flag will first be notified on their Student Aid Report (SAR) by a ‘C’ located in the upper right hand corner of the report and detailed comments will be printed in the body of the report.  SFS will send a Missing Document email to the student LOOP account.  Students also have the option of logging into their OASIS Student Portal account, selecting the Student Financial Services option, and looking under ‘Missing Documents’ to see the complete list of requested documents.  Unresolved Caution Flags automatically render a financial aid applicant ineligible to receive federal funds.

In order to resolve a Caution Flag and regain student financial aid eligibility, the student must submit the required documentation according to the related Caution Flag.

Dependency Question Verification

All students required to submit dependency question documentation will be notified via Missing Document email to their LOOP account.

If you answered YES to questions 52-57 on your 2011-12 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) you will be required to submit documentation to complete your financial aid file. You can view your Student Aid Report (SAR) online at  www.fafsa.gov by clicking on ‘View Processed Information’ 

Note: you must disable any and all pop-up blockers in order to view your SAR. Once you have identified the question to which you answered YES, locate this question below in order to determine what documentation you are required to submit to student financial services.
 
Question 52: At any time since you turned age 13, were both your parents deceased, were you in foster care or were you a dependent or ward of the court?

• Required Documentation: submit a copy of the death certificates for both of your parents; OR submit a copy of official court documentation (signed or sealed by judge) that confirms your ward of the court or foster care status and the effective dates(s).

Question 53: Are you or were you an emancipated minor as determined by a court in your state of legal residence?

• Required Documentation: submit a copy of your official emancipated minor judgment (signed or sealed by judge) from your state of legal residence as listed on the FAFSA; OR  submit a copy of your official emancipated minor judgment (signed or sealed by judge) from your state of legal residence at the time the decision was made.

Question 54: Are you or were you in legal guardianship as determined by a court in your state of legal residence?

• Required Documentation: submit a copy of the official legal guardianship judgment (signed or sealed by judge) from your state of legal residence as listed on the FAFSA; OR submit a copy of the official legal guardianship judgment (signed or sealed by judge) from your state of legal residence at the time the decision was made.

Question 55: At any time on or after July 1, 2010 did your high school or school district homeless liaison determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless?

• Required Documentation: submit a signed letter, on official letterhead, from your high school OR school district homeless liaison determining you to be an unaccompanied youth who was homeless.

Question 56: At any time on or after July 1, 2010 did the director of an emergency shelter or transitional housing program funding by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless?

• Required Documentation: submit a signed letter, on official letterhead, from the director of an emergency or transitional housing program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development determining you to be an unaccompanied youth who was homeless.

Question 57: At any time on or after July 1, 2010 did the director of a runaway or homeless youth basic center or transitional living program determine that you were unaccompanied youth who was homeless or were self-supporting and at risk of being homeless?

• Required Documentation: submit a signed letter, on official letterhead, from the director of a runaway or a homeless youth basic center or transitional living program determining you to be homeless or self-supporting and at risk of being homeless.

If you are unable to provide documentation for any of these questions, you may need to make a correction to your FAFSA changing your answer to NO. Students who are unable to provide documentation, but feel they have extenuating circumstances should contact Student Financial Services.
