Helpful Tax Information for International Students

Filing your taxes can be confusing, but the Office of International Student Affairs wants to help international students file their taxes - attend a helpful workshop to get your desired tax information.

All international students & scholars in F and J non-immigrant status are required to fill out an income tax return each year, even if you do not have United States source income.

This is how it works…….

If you have been in the US in F, J, M, or Q status for any part of 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and/ or 2007 (even if it’s for one day), you are considered to be a nonresident. For tax purposes you must file form 8843. This includes F-2’s and J-2’s.

If you have been in the US in F or J status for any part of 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and/ or 2007 and were employed, you must file Form 8843 AND form 1040NR-EZ.

If you arrived to the US for the first time in 2008 in F-1, J-1, F-2, or J-2 status, you DO NOT need to file a tax return for 2007.

If you are a student in F status and have been in the US since 2002 or before, you are considered to be a resident for tax purposes and must file Form 1040 EZ.

If you are a scholar (teacher/ researcher) in J status and have been in the US since 2005 or before, you are considered to be a resident for tax purposes and must file Form 1040EZ.

Tax forms are due April 15, 2008. Confused? Have questions? Need help? Come to one of the tax workshops listed below, sponsored by the Office of International Student Affairs.
