GENERAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
  • Be enrolled for at least 6 credit hours in a degree program
  • Be in good academic standing with at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA as a continuing student
  • Have a valid social security number
  • International students must be enrolled full-time (12 credit hours for undergraduates; 9 credit hours for graduate students) and have a valid passport, F1 Visa, and I-20. 

   Additional Requirements for Federal Work Study (FWS)
  • Meet all of the above "General Eligibility Requirements", and
  • Demonstrate financial need on the FAFSA
  • Not be in default of a student loan or owe repayment on Title IV funds
  • International students are not eligible for FWS.

APPLYING FOR A JOB ON-CAMPUS

  • Job openings are posted on ColumbiaWorks. If you find a job you want to apply for then come to the Student Employment Office (SEO) to fill out an application. Bring the following documents:
  • U.S. Passport, or
  • Social Security Card/or Birth Certificate and a current Driver's License or State Issued ID
  • Permanent Residents must also show their alien registration document (green card)
  • International students who do not have a social security card may complete a job application. If you an international student you are required to apply for the card when hired, but before reporting to work and cannot be placed on payroll until the social security card is issued.*See the Assistant Dean of International Student Affairs for additional information.
  • Students must take their job application to the contact person listed on the posting
  • The supervisor, not the SEO, interviews students and determines who will be hired for the job.

WHEN YOU ARE HIRED

  • Your supervisor should give you a job description and a Work Authorization,
  • Bring both forms to the SEO for payroll processing before you start working,
  • We process students for payroll Monday – Thursday, from 10am - 3pm,
  • Bring a blank check or a bank statement with your account number and the bank’s routing number so you can be placed on direct deposit,
  • All students are paid through direct deposit. The payroll office will assist you if you don’t have a checking account,
  • Federal and state taxes will be taken out of your paycheck based on how you complete the W-4 tax withholding forms.
  • If you did not complete a job application, bring the required identification documents listed above,
  • You cannot be placed on payroll without these documents.

ON THE JOB

  • Make sure you have completed payroll processing before you start working,
  • Review your job description with your supervisor to make sure you understand your responsibilities,
  • Be eager to learn and dress appropriately for the office,
  • Know that you cannot work in more than one on-campus job at the same time,
  • Report to work on time. Always inform your supervisor if you will be late or absent,
  • Know that you can be terminated for repeated tardiness, absenteeism, or poor job performance
  • Your supervisor should give you a verbal and a written warning before terminating you,
  • Warnings are not required for students with extended “unapproved” absences or for students whose behavior violates the college’s Code of Conduct (see the student handbook-The Informer)
  • Your job performance will be evaluated at the end of spring semester or the end of your employment.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • You and your supervisor will determine your work schedule,
  • You cannot work more than 8 hours a day
  • Student workers and federal work-study students cannot work more than 20 hours a week
  • Students hired in hourly part-time jobs may work up to 30 hours a week
  • You will only be paid for hours you work. You will not be paid for vacation time, sick time, holidays, or a lunch hour
  • Your earnings are not applied to your tuition and fees
  • You will be paid on the 1st and 15th of each month through direct deposit
  • Your supervisor should explain how your work hours will be documented (sign in sheets, online, etc.),
  • Your supervisor is also responsible for submitting your time to Payroll each pay-period, per the “timesheet due date” listed on the hourly Payroll Schedule,
  • Know who can enter your time if your supervisor is not available when the timesheet is due.

SUMMER EMPLOYMENT

  • Your supervisor will evaluate your job performance at the end of the spring semester and tell you if you’ll be rehired for summer,
  • Only continuing students may be hired in student worker or federal work-study summer jobs,
  • Students must be enrolled for the summer or registered for the fall for at least 6 credit hrs. ,
  • Social security tax (FICA) will be deducted from your earnings if you are not enrolled for the summer,
  • Students may work up to 30 hours a week during the summer, per the supervisor’s permission,
  • Federal Work-Study students may be rehired for the summer if funds are available per Student Financial Services.
