Graduating Students

STUDENT REGISTRATION  |  EVENTS  |  INDUSTRY EVENTS FAQ  |  PREP SESSIONS  |  RESOURCES

Industry Events are intended to give students a leg up as they finish their time at Columbia and head into the professional world. Each of the free events is fashioned somewhat differently. Some are showcases, others are portfolio reviews or receptions. All are networking events. Students should prepare accordingly. We expect several hundred professionals to attend.

Some of the events are open to any graduating student with a real interest in the industries represented- regardless of their major. (Example: a Film & Video student will go to the “Moving Pictures” event but if interested in shooting music videos, will also go the “Music Industry Reception” event.) The open events are marked with a blue star.

Industry Events are specifically for students graduating in Spring and Summer 2012, or December 2011 graduates. If you’re not graduating but want to know what goes down at the events, volunteer to work at the events either with your department or the Portfolio Center. We need lots of help.

If you are interested in attending Industry Events, please plan to attend an
Industry Events Prep Session

Industry Events FAQ

Is this a job fair?
No, this is not a job fair. While it might lead to job opportunities, at its core this is a networking experience where the industry comes to you.  At no other time in your career will you be in a room with this many interested professionals.

Why do we do this?
We do this in order to provide you an opportunity to build relationships.  While these relationships may not lead to a career immediately, they will prove valuable over time.

Who should go to Industry Events?
December 2011, May 2012 and August 2012 graduating students.

How can I invite a professional?
Perhaps you are already working with or happen to know some creative industry professionals. Please email industrynight@colum.edu for more information.

What should I bring?
Events will differ based on industry. After you register for Industry Events, you will receive a confirmation email with details about event expectations. Please attend an Industry Events Prep Session (dates coming soon) for more.

At the very least, bring copies of your resume and business cards, but ideally this is an opportunity to get valuable feedback on your portfolio.  Obviously, this varies from major to major.  If you have questions about what makes a good portfolio, please visit colum.edu/portfolio.

What should I wear?
Dress like a creative industry professional. That often means nice, clean, and casual. Managers and other business-oriented people may dress a notch nicer.

How do I prepare?
Please attend an Industry Events Prep Session.  And utilize the resources below.
