About Creative Writing

Students majoring in Creative Writing in the Department of English at Columbia choose a concentration in either Poetry or Nonfiction.

A concentration in Poetry helps students develop their own voices as poets and acquire the knowledge and historical grounding necessary to write and publish poetry of power and sophistication. Students of the Creative Writing-Poetry Program will become familiar with a wide range of models and formal strategies and gain a greater creative, critical, and aesthetic understanding of their discipline.

A concentration in Nonfiction introduces students to a variety of forms in nonfiction and helps students discover different ways of writing that are individual and original. Students will also gain a clear sense the genre’s openness to new modes of expression and will become well versed in the history and forms of the genre.
