Kathleen Giles

Lecturer

Kathleen Giles joined the English Department as a full time lecturer in fall, 2003, after teaching as an adjunct faculty member since fall of 2000. She teaches Introduction to College Reading; College Reading; Introduction to College Writing; Enhanced Composition I, and the Bridge Program.

Kathleen has an undergraduate BA degree in social studies with a minor in elementary education from Caldwell College in Caldwell, New Jersey. She earned an M.Ed. in Reading and an Ed.D. in Elementary Education with a focus on literacy education from Rutgers University. Her research studies included: The Relationship of Selected Visual Arts Learnings to Kindergarten Reading and Cognitive Strategy Intervention for Improving Transactional Writing and Reading Comprehension, which was her doctoral dissertation. While at Rutgers, Kathleen taught in Holmdel Township Public Schools, Holmdel, New Jersey where she was a regular classroom teacher and teacher of the gifted. Her students took first prize in the Olympiad of the Mind's World Championship for two consecutive years and she received the Olympiad's Golden Apple award for teaching excellence.

While in New Jersey, Kathleen was a Trainer/Coordinator for New Jersey's Plan to Revise Special Education, a U.S. Office of Education grant-funded study. In this capacity she was liaison the NJ State Department of Education, Division of Special Education, and Educational Testing Service, Princeton, N.J. She was a member of the Holmdel Township Schools Administrative Team and trainer for Holmdel's professional staff of 186 in implementing the Plan to Revise Special Education.

Kathleen later moved to Winston/Salem, NC where she became Head of Middle Grades for Summit School. At Summit School, she was a member of the Summit School Improvement Plan, a board member of the Triad Association of Independent Schools, President of Beta Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a participant at The Center for Creative Leadership's Independent Schools Administrator Program and a committee member on Mr. Louis V. Gerstner's, Twenty First Century Schools Program, which gave forty million dollars in grants to public education over a three year period. Since moving to Chicago in 2000, Kathleen has acted in several art films.
