Suzanne Blum-Malley
Director of English as a Second Language
Suzanne Blum Malley is the Director of the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, which offers support services and specialized courses to all students with heritage/home languages other than English. She earned both her BA in Spanish and Cultural Anthropology and her MA in Applied Linguistics and Hispanic Literatures from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has taught both ESL and Spanish in the United States and in Spain.
In addition to teaching in the ESL and Composition Programs, Suzanne works closely with other faculty and administrators at the college in assisting ESL students. She serves as a master teacher for the University of Illinois at Chicago Master's in Applied Linguistics Program, with MA students interning in her classes for a semester prior to completing their degrees. She is also involved in the Sharing Cultures Project, which links students and teachers at Columbia College to students and teachers at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Suzanne's areas of interest and research include alternative pedagogies for college-level second language reading and writing. She has recently co-authored a composition textbook with Amy Hawkins titled Translating Culture: A Rhetoric for Ethnographic Writing in the Composition Classroom (forthcoming). Suzanne currently serves as Chair of the New Media permanent section of the Midwest Modern Language Association.
