Magazine Reports
We all know to read a publication before submitting. Joe Mackall, editor of the CNF journal River Teeth, cautions if you want to read all the publications you hope to submit to you better hope you live to be 300 years old, but to be familiar with five to six you want to submit to is a realistic goal.
In order to get more familiar with specific prose markets, our students do in-depth reports on magazines they admire. They are similar to market sheets, but include interviews with magazine editors, the reviewer’s two-cents and simple data analysis of three issues. Below you’ll find a sampling of our student reports; they’ll be updated bi-annually.
There is nothing like them on the Web.
It goes without saying but we’ll say it anyhow; the views expressed in our market research are those of the student reviewers and do not represent the opinions of the Fiction Writing Department, or Columbia College Chicago. The research can help you narrow down your search for a suitable home for your prose.
