Checklist: Education
When applying to Education Department
as a domestic student (if you are an international student, please
refer to the bottom of the page) you will need to submit the following:
All MAT students are expected to satisfy the basic teacher education program mandates of the State Board of Education. All MAT student are also required to complete the Illinois Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) and receive a passing score. For questions about the Illinois State Board of Education please contact them at 800-845-8749. Be sure to include a copy of the Illinois Test of Basic Skills with your application. Students may apply without the ITBS and, if admitted, receive conditional admission requiring them to receive a passing score by the end of the first term.
Those applying for the MAT in Elementary Education are required to have a concentration of 18 undergraduate hours in one discipline, which includes a minimum of 3 courses of upper division work.
Those applying for the MAT in Art Education are required to have 32 undergraduate hours in visual art. A work sample may be required. If so, the graduate department will contact the student directly.
If you are an international student you will need to submit all of the above materials as well as the additional International Application Materials.
If you are applying to be a student-at-large (available for the Education program only), please contact Sheila Brady at 312.344.8147 or sbrady@colum.edu. Unfortunately, international students are not eligible to apply as a student-at-large.
- $55 application fee: You may send a check or money order to the graduate office or complete the online payment form
If you choose to use the online payment form, please select "Grad Application Fee" and also be sure to include your social security number (if applicable). If possible, you should forward the payment confirmation to the Graduate Office (gradsch@colum.edu). To pay by credit card over the phone, please call 312-344-7260. If you pay by check, money order, or with a credit card over the phone, please note that your payment will take longer to process. - Completed domestic application
- Self-Assessment
essay: Within your self-assessment essay, discuss your understanding of the teacher as a creative leader, indicating what this means in terms of interaction with students, colleagues, families and communities beyond the school. Also include any relevant teaching experience.
- Two letters of recommendation
- Resume
- Two copies of all transcripts from any and all colleges/universities attended
- Supplemental Education Department Evaluation form
