Checklist: Creative Writing - Poetry
When applying to Creative Writing - Poetry as a domestic student (if you are an international student, please refer to the bottom of the page) you will need to submit the following:
- Online application, with application fee
- Self-Assessment essay
- Two letters of recommendation
- Resume
- A transcript from any and all colleges/universities attended
- Work sample: Applicants must submit ten pages of poetry. A poem may be more than one page, however, please do not put more than one poem on each page. The total should equal 10 pages. Written submissions should be typed and two copies of each submission are needed.
- Optional: Application for Graduate Student Instructorship: Students who wish to apply to take the Composition Theory & Praxis course (which, upon successful completion, qualifies you to teach Writing & Rhetoric courses as a Graduate Student Instructor), should include a resume or CV and a one to two page, double spaced essay that addresses the following questions:
- 1. Why do you want to become a GSI?
- 2. Why do you believe that you are well-suited to be an instructor of writing?
- 3. What challenges do you imagine you may face in the classroom?
- 4. How might you, at this point, describe your understanding of a productive and healthy student-teacher relationship?

A reasonable background in the humanities and/or poetry writing is desirable.
If you are an international student you will need to submit all of the above materials as well as the additional International Application Materials.
