Ann Hetzel Gunkel
Ann Hetzel Gunkel, PhD, is Associate Professor of Cultural Studies and Humanities in the Department of Humanities, History, and Social Sciences at Columbia College Chicago.
Dr. Gunkel received her doctorate in Philosophy from De Paul University. She teaches "Introduction to Cultural Studies," "Urban Images in Media & Film, Food and Culture," "Philosophical Issues in Film," "Postmodernism & Posthumanism in Theory & Practice," "Cultural Studies Capstone I: Proposal Writing," and "Cultural Studies Capstone II: Research Project."
An interdisciplinary Humanities scholar who’s trained in Philosophy and Cultural Studies, Dr. Gunkel has wide research and teaching specializations, including in Ethnic Studies, Popular Culture, New Media Criticism, Polish and Polish Diaspora Studies, and Postmodernism. She is a Fulbright Scholar who has lectured widely in North America, Russia, Western, and Eastern Europe. Her recent publications include work on popular culture, urban religion, cyberculture, food and culture, pedagogy, and ethnic music.
Dr. Gunkel is a native Chicagoan who’s active in Polish American Studies and the winner of the prestigious Joseph V. Swastek and Creative Arts Prizes in that field. An award-winning designer of educational multimedia, Dr. Gunkel is a public intellectual who has appeared frequently in national and local media. She is also a published documentary photographer and award-winning graphic designer. Her digital artworks have been widely published and exhibited at A.R.C. Gallery, Chicago, and at the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art. She lives with her family in a 1928 Chicago bungalow.
