Q. I am not taking a class, but am interested in using one of the department's labs. Is that possible?

Graduate Program FAQs

Q. I am interested in becoming a graduate student in photography. Who do I contact?
A. Please contact the Graduate School at gradsch@colum.edu or 312-344-7260. Check out their website to get info and downloadable applications.

Q. Can I attend Part-Time?
A. No. Up until your very last semester, you must be full-time.

Q. Is admission competitive? What do you look for?
A. We admit about 15% of our applicants. We look for people who show evidence of a serious commitment to photography and seem to be a good fit for our program. We welcome people with degrees in other fields, a BFA is not necessary.

Q. Is this a good program to prepare for a career in photojournalism or other areas of commercial photography?
A. No. We don't support photojournalism or commercial photography within the Grad Program. The Graduate Program is for artists who wish to pursue serious, sustained artistic investigations into the medium, and also want a credential (the degree) that may help them find a teaching job. People who are interested in PJ or refining other technical skills would be better off taking some Columbia undergraduate courses as a Student-at-Large.

Q. When are applications decided on?
A. We hope to contact applicants by mid-April.

Q. How do I apply for admission to the program for Spring semester?
A. Although we say that this is possible... it is very, very rare and is only done when some exceptional circumstances (i.e. family emergency, health crisis) justify it. Virtually all new Graduate Students must start in the Fall.

Q. Do all MFA's find teaching jobs?
A. Full-time tenure-track teaching jobs in the arts are very scarce and competitive. After Graduate School, photographers must struggle to advance their careers and get exhibits, publications, grants and other credentials. Those things make one competitive... the MFA is just a pre-requisite for teaching at the college level, not a guarantee.
