IAM student wins Apps for Metro Chicago Contest

Mi ParqueMi Parque, a bi-lingual smartphone app co-created by IAM’s Academic Manager, Mindy Faber was named one of Grand Challenge Winners in the Apps for Metro Chicago Contest. The app was developed in a few short months by an all-women team led by Faber and Pallavi Anderson from Motorola Solutions. Students on the team included those from the Interactive Arts & Media Department at Columbia College, IIT and UIC, and were mentored by experienced software engineers from Motorola Solutions, Orbitz, Pearson VUE, and Thomson Reuters/Hubbard One.

LoginThe app, Mi Parque, is a bilingual participatory placemaking web and smartphone application that helps residents of Little Village ensure that a new 23 acre new park being built on a former Superfund clean-up site is maintained as a vibrant safe, open and healthy green space for the community. Residents can submit, view and vote on ideas for improving the community, receive health, safety and weather alerts via text messages or through Facebook in Spanish or English.

During the October Community Round of the competition, Mi Parque received 2nd Place and was also given the IBM Placemaking Award administered by the Metropolitan Agency for Planning.  In December, during the expanded field of Grand Challenge contenders, Mi Parque placed 5th overall bringing the app’s total prize winnings to $8,000. Award money will go towards app development and support of Mi Parque’s community partner, Little Village Environmental Justice Organization.

Mindy“This app is such a beautiful example of collaboration,” Faber says. “It’s what happens when a college like Columbia comes together with industry and community around a civic purpose. Making projects like this possible is what make Columbia College and the IAM Department shine.”

The Apps for Metro Chicago competition launched June 24, 2011.  In an era of open data, the contest recognized the need to guide and facilitate public access to local government data.  The competition’s mission is to inspire the development of applications which improve the lives of Metro Chicagoans. Over 250 data sets were provided by the City of Chicago, Cook County, State of Illinois, and Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.

Faber and other Grand Challenge winners of the contest will be recognized at a future ceremony currently being planned by the city and county which will feature Open Data and showcase the winning apps.

Faber and Anderson were recently the subject of a Chicago Works feature on Channel 23 which can be viewed here
