Graduate Program Completion Options

In addition, all AEMM graduate students must complete a one-semester internship (360 hours) and choose one of three options to complete their graduate studies. The options are as follows:

(A) The Master's Thesis Option: The principle objective of the Master's Thesis is to demonstrate original scholarship and contribute to the general knowledge of the field of arts, entertainment, and media management.

(B) The Master's Thesis Project Option: In lieu of a formal Master's thesis, the AEMM graduate student may elect to develop a Thesis Project demonstrating his/her knowledge within their area of concentration. Examples of such projects include video documentaries, musical productions, computer models, etc. The Thesis Project must be accompanied by a narrative text describing its intent and placing the work in a historical and critical context.

The department has approved the business plan as a thesis project.

(C) The Comprehensive Examination Option: In lieu of the Master's Thesis or Thesis project, AEMM graduate students may elect to complete the Master of Arts Management degree by taking a 3 day long comprehensive examination.  Students electing the Comprehensive Examination Option will, while enrolled in the required AEMM Seminar, write a unified series of three essays (5-15 pages each) on related topics of strategic importance to arts, entertainment or media management.  On satisfactory completion of all the course work and the essay series, the student will take a comprehensive written examination in the following areas:

  • management foundations (4-5 hours) including all core required courses;
  • area of specialization (4-5 hours);
  • Problems in arts, entertainment, and media management (4-5 hours).
