Social Media and Digital Strategy, BA

Content strategists and social media managers are in high demand for industries ranging from arts and entertainment to nonprofits and tech startups. Social Media and Digital Strategy is an exciting new major, and your coursework will give you a competitive advantage in this fast-growing field. You’ll study consumer motivations, analytics, content strategy and content creation to learn how to best engage digital audiences. You’ll graduate with a portfolio that reflects a broad understanding of marketing materials and strategy.

Aspects of your coursework will draw from programs in Advertising, Business and Entrepreneurship, Interactive Arts and Media, Journalism, and Public Relations. This field is rich with internship opportunities, helping you graduate career ready with ample real-world experience for career paths of today and tomorrow.

What to Expect Your First Year

You’ll explore digital research and consumer motivations and develop content strategies in an attempt to engage audiences. Your content-development assignments are a crucial first step toward building a body of work that will help you land your first internship. You’ll take courses such as Intro to Social Media and Digital Strategy, Social Media Ethics, Smartphone Photo, and Essentials of Interviewing.

What to Expect Your Last Year

During your last year, you’ll create an interactive digital campaign reflecting your very best content strategy and creation work, refining your social media and digital strategy portfolio. You’ll also likely be working on your second internship assignment, possibly as a social media community manager, a content strategist or a content creator using video, blogs, and/or social media platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and more.

You’ll be fully engaged in the Social Media and Digital Strategy Practicum, which functions as a digital consultancy as you develop real work for clients. At this point, your body of work will include social media-focused projects from your class assignments as well as real-world projects. By the time you graduate you’ll be prepared to work as a social media storyteller and create content across multiple media platforms.

What experience will I get outside the classroom?

Put your social media and digital strategy expertise to work in clubs and programs like our student chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America, our award-winning college chapter of the American Ad Federation, the campus chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and more. You’ll have the chance to participate in professional conferences and events, such as Social Media Week, Chicago Ideas Week, Mobile Marketing Summit, Word of Mouth Marketing Association and more.

What are my internship options?

The Social Media and Digital Strategy major was created in response to the mass of internship opportunities our undergraduates found at for-profit brands, nonprofits, media outlets, artistic brands, startups and political organizations. Students who’ve completed coursework now included in the major have served in the following roles:
