Summerfolk

By Maxim Gorky
in a translation by Nick Dear
April 22-May 3, 2009
Getz Theater
Directed by faculty member Kathleen Perkins
In the early years of the 20th century, Russians of every social class were beginning to see the onset of a great political upheaval. Gorky's mighty naturalistic masterpiece places an assorted group of Russians together each year, living together at their summer holiday retreat. Some reveal their fear at the prospect of change, some are angry, and some yearn for a new, better life. With delicate humor, they question the value of their work, their art and their leisure, and they are shocked by the response their disputes reveal. Relationships break under the strain and scandals of business and infidelity are laid bare.
