Christy Mahon runs away from home after killing his father in County Mayo, Ireland. When he arrives at Michael James Flaherty’s pub, the locals are enthralled with his story and impressed with his bravado, including the bar-maid, Pegeen Mike, who falls for him. When the truth of the matter arrives, Christy has to scramble to maintain his mantle as the “Playboy of the Western World.”
