Beginning MIDI*

This course introduces students to the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) and to MIDI sequencing using computer software and synthesizers. The course focuses on essential concepts of computer assisted music production and teaches practical aspects of MIDI in a hands-on environment, following current trends. Knowledge of music theory or music composition is not required.
*Prerequisite: Computer experience

Theory: Music and How to Read It

A fundamental course in music literacy covering the basic concepts of notation, rhythm, tonality, and harmony, emphasizing a firm grasp of intervals, triads, major scales, duple and triple meters, sight singing, and dictation.

Groove Band*   
32-0820-41 Monday & Wednesday UPDATE: Tuesday & Thursday, 12:30 PM – 3:20 PM; 2 credits

This class for instrumentalists centers on pop music, particularly the various “grooves” of rock and roll, culminating in the student Showcase performance. Students must provide their own instruments for each class session. Keyboards and drums are provided.
*Prerequisite: Two years of instrumental instruction

The Singer Prepares*   
32-0520-41 Tuesday & Thursday, 12:30 PM – 3:20 PM; 2 credits

This class addresses the fundamentals of singing performance with special attention given to stage awareness, microphone technique, preparation of material, and the reduction of stage fright, culminating in the student Showcase performance. Students must provide sheet music for at least four songs.
*Prerequisite: Participation in school or church choral ensemble, or community theater

Creating Music   
32-0210-41 Tuesday & Thursday, 9:00 AM – 11:50 AM; 2 credits

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of music composition, including rhythmic patterns, melody, harmony, notation techniques, and choice of instruments. Student work is performed by the class on available instruments and voices.
