The Art of Chinese Shadow Puppets
February 15 - March 30, 2007
In celebration of the Chinese New Year, the Center for Asian Arts and Media at Columbia College Chicago in conjunction with the Consulate General of the Peoples Republic of China in Chicago presents The Art of Chinese Shadow Puppets. Chinese Shadow Play (pi ying xi) incorporates the life, customs and beliefs of the everyday person as an important art and entertainment that blends the traditions of painting, sculpture, music, singing and storytelling. This exhibit features approximately fifty works of selected characters, scenes and props used in shadow plays. Puppets are made by tanning and flattening the skin of a donkey or sheep in addition to carving, coloring, ironing and bounding to construct various figures and stage properties, which are controlled and played on screen by artists through lights. As a flat carving art, its esthetic is very similar to paper-cutting, but the modeling of figures, stage property, horses, carts and buildings also resembles that of Chinese opera.
