The Big Read
The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of its citizens. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. The Center for Asian Arts and Media will use Amy Tan’s “The Joy Luck Club” to explore issues of immigration and assimilation shaping Asian American identity across generations through both educational outreach in public schools and community forums. A group of Asian-American writers and college students will serve as discussion facilitators. CAAM will also provide high school teachers with learning and study materials for classroom discussions.
Additional programs include a keynote address by The Joy Luck Club film producer Janet Yang, an exhibition of Asian women on screen and a series of mother-daughter workshops in addition to The Woman Warrior Festival, our biennial event honoring women of Asian descent.
