Guidelines for Preparation of Book Manuscripts

Music of the African Diaspora Series

Book manuscripts or portions of manuscripts should begin with a title page that includes the title of the book and the name of the author. The several parts of the manuscript should be presented in the following order, as appropriate:

  • Title page
  • Dedication
  • Table of Contents (with manuscript page numbers)
  • Foreword
  • Preface
  • Acknowledgments
  • Introduction
  • Body of the book
  • Appendix(es)
  • Glossary
  • Bibliography
  • Endnotes
  • Captions for illustrations
  • Tables
  • Illustrations
  • All permissions, in writing, for reprinting of illustrative or extensive quotations
  • Each of the parts of the book should begin on a new page. Pages should be numbered consecutively and continuously throughout the entire manuscript. (The numbering sequence should not be restarted with each chapter or part.)

On each page after the title page, the following items should be included in a header in the upper right corner of the page:

  • Author's name
  • Title of the chapter or part of the manuscript
  • Page number

The entire manuscript should be double-spaced, including all quotations, illustrations, captions, endnotes, and any other copy aside from photographs or other artwork.

The manuscript should be printed on one side of the paper only.

Margins should be at least 1 inch in width on all sides of the page.

Endnotes should be used rather than footnotes.
